Phil Johnson
Chair
Phil is a survivor of abuse by several members of clergy in the Church of England. He has been fighting for justice and better support for survivors for nearly 30 years and has been involved in many successful criminal and civil legal actions.
He served as a member of the National Safeguarding Panel of the CofE for 9 years and has been a member of MACSAS since 2006.
He was a Core Participant in the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse (IICSA) and is currently working on the Church of England's Redress Scheme.
He also runs a support group for victims of sexual abuse in Sussex.
David Greenwood
Legal Associate
David is a prominent campaigner for the rights of victims of abuse. Since 1998 has focussed exclusively on child abuse law. His work in this time has helped to change the law. The judgement in one landmark case led to the lifting of time limits on compensation claims in abuse cases. He has also worked to expand the law of vicarious liability – crucial in many child abuse cases. David is an Executive Member of The Association of Child Abuse Lawyers. He was named Claimant Personal Injury Lawyer of the Year in 2014.
David also represented Church abuse survivors throughout the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse (IICSA)
Dr. Margaret Kennedy
Founder & Life President
Dr Margaret Kennedy founded MACSAS in the late 1990s following requests from clergy abuse survivors who attended Christian Survivors of Sexual Abuse (CSSA), which she also founded in 1989.
She was awarded The Canterbury Cross for service to the Church of England by Archbishop Justin Welby in 2020 for her campaigning work in raising the awareness of Church abuse and improving safeguarding.
She continues to campaign passionately for abuse survivors and for the rights of those with disabilities in the U.K. and Ireland.
Paul Campbell
Helpline Coordinator
Paul is a retired Social Worker and a survivor of childhood sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church.
He was one of the founder members when MACSAS was set-up in the 1990s and has worked tirelessly to support victims and survivors for the last 30 years. He organises and runs the MACSAS helpline and coordinates support for survivors who use it.
Paul was instrumental in the setting-up of Safe Spaces, the support service for survivors of abuse in both the Catholic and Anglican Churches and sits as a survivor representative on its board.
